Within the heart there are many rooms just as in a home. The living room, dining room, playroom, kitchen and even the bathroom. These are rooms full of life, light and relationships, but then there are the other rooms: the attic and basement. These can be dark, dungy and even downright creepy. They are disorganized, unruly and confusing.
We all have them, but here, we venture rarely. Usually only to store things, hurtful and disgusting things. However, to discover the messiness of them they must be visited. Though, mostly, we don’t ever visit them. We just throw our junk in them and try to forget about it. We bolt the bulging door shut and constantly lean and push against it to keep it shut. Once in awhile the door bursts open and we are confronted with the nastiness. We may even despise ourselves for storing such things, but the nastiness has been exposed. That’s a good thing.
Through recent events the basement of my heart has been exposed. It’s ugliness is painful and downright scary! How can it be this bad when I tried so hard to build a wonderful home, aka heart? It got that way because It was ignored. Now that I know how messy it is it can’t be ignored. Despising myself for letting my heart become like this will only lead to storing more and more messes. It’s time to put on the gloves and tearfully go to work. Hopefully for the rest of my life I can endeavor to keep attic and basement of my heart clean and organized. So much so that when anyone comes to mind they may venture through unharmed without bitterness, contempt or hatred clinging to them.
I want the basement and attic of my heart to be like my grandmothers where little children can happily play, rummage and explore to their heart’s delight.
May the storage rooms of my heart be a place of life rather that decay.
May I always seek to be like Jesus for the rest of my days and especially when it’s difficult.
